Optimizing Descender Device Strategies for Understanding and Enhancing Post-release Survival of Red Snapper in the Gulf

This project will combine novel acoustic telemetry technology and high-resolution cameras to determine optimal use strategies for fish descender devices with the goal of maximizing survival of discarded red snapper in the Gulf.

This study will build upon previous data to inform the continued refinement of best practices for using these devices while providing empirical decision-making criteria to fishery managers tasked with regulating use of these devices in the recreational fishery.

Project findings will be shared with the recreational angling community through numerous engagement avenues including synergies with regional initiatives such as Return ‘Em Right.
