"Padre Island National Seashore Resource Management Challenges and Opportunities:  Data Gaps and Research Needs"

Understanding park resources is critical for the development of near-term management priorities, effective engagement in landscape-scale partnership and education efforts, and long-term strategic park planning. A recent Natural Resource Condition Assessment to evaluate park resource conditions highlighted stressors and emerging threats, as well as data and knowledge gaps. Of the evaluated key resources, condition could not be determined for approximately 70% due to such gaps. This presentation will explore the resources, management challenges, and research opportunities at the Seashore, from water quality to wildlife to wind-tidal flats and the many biological and physical natural resources in between that are managed for "purposes of public recreation, benefit, and inspiration" (Public Law 87-712).

Shelley Todd leads the Science and Resource Management Division at Padre Island National Seashore. The division manages the cultural and natural resources of the park, ensures park activities comply with environmental protection laws, and collaborates with external researchers. Prior to moving to the Coastal Bend, Todd worked for the National Park Service at Hot Springs National Park and Buffalo National River, for the U.S. Geological Survey in the Arkansas Water Science Center, and for the U.S. Forest Service at the Ozark-St. Francis National Forest.
