Help return recycled oyster shells to our bays!
Volunteers will bag recycled shell and place it onto oyster reefs, helping strengthen reefs, improve water quality, and create habitat for fish, shrimp, and crabs.
This family-friendly event includes interactive educational booths for kids, and all materials will be provided (gloves, shovels, biodegradable bags, snacks, and volunteer t-shirts). Wear clothes and shoes you don’t mind getting dirty and come ready to make a difference.
Whether you’re a returning volunteer or it’s your first time, we’d love to have you join us.
About Sink Your Shucks
Sink Your Shucks is an oyster shell recycling and reef restoration program based at Harte Research Institute at Texas A&M University–Corpus Christi. We partner with local restaurants, oyster festivals, and local oyster farms to collect and recycle oyster shells that would otherwise end up in landfills.
Since 2009, we’ve recycled more than 3 million pounds of oyster shell and restored over 45 acres of oyster reef along the Texas coast. With the help of volunteers like you, these shells are returned to the bay where they create habitat for marine life and support healthier coastal ecosystems.
